The Sea at Brighton
The sea is unsure of itself,
jukeboxing through colours:
turquoise to lettuce to spinach
to slug-brown. A hit of denim
caught between colours.
Jet skis make water spouts
by the pier with confidence.
The structure sheds a little joy
while seagulls strut like models
by the waterfront. Wasps
colonise pints. Chips are dropped
on an unseen map, new lines
of demarcation are drawn up
as the wireframe of the old pier
dips its head underwater
for the first time in years.
