Distance

Distance

Night-star has infinite distance
It blinks down to earth
out of that simple combination
of curiosity and opportunity

Peering downward through
long atmosphere
gauzy ozone layer
string of gentle cirrus clouds
through the apartment window
to the woman on her couch

She stares into her television
at faraway wars and senseless death
cross-country smoke, weather patterns
The star is disappointed
wondered why she doesn’t  unplug
go outdoors on this
locally perfect day
look up at the sky
and be grateful
but she can’t
