Rain on Motorways
it wasn't that much,
but it was something
alright. rain fell flat; flew
straight sideways, cold
as new bed sheets and cleaning
a door of the car. my window
was cracked – the angle was perfect
to get through the gap to your shoulder
and pour on your legs. that's from a break-in
which happened a while ago.
I've already made the repair.
I was driving – we were going
on holiday. west coast
of Ireland. you sitting beside me
in rotten a mood as the sky.
and the clouds when we see
past the rain were a pavement –
a grey slab stretched out – concrete
hard and laid on by construction.
at one point the road was so perfectly
wet that our tires went sideways
and it took me a second to steer.
it happened when we were passing
one side a bus, and the other
this big field of cattle. I wonder
what they would have
thought was happening
