Rethinking the Pinnacle of Success
if fish speak to one another
and mushrooms spore-talk
across forest loam
perhaps the turkey’s call
registers more than
simple See or Run!
and it's time to pay attention
if slugs—
the bane of society—
offer miracle slime
worth a thousand surgeon’s stitches
so we humans can seal our
inside wounds
then perhaps evolution
hasn't done us wrong
though we’ve lost our tails
and forgotten how
to swim
