Depleted Waterways
My mate and I
have been hungry too long.
There’s no more food in the river.
The lakes are too crowded.
So we flew to the ocean
and tried to find food on the beach.
The water goes back and forth,
so there’s no time to hunt.
The humans keep chasing us.
There are no trees or bushes
for shade from the sun
as we look for fish.
I don’t know if we’ll survive
this harsh place,
but there’s nowhere else
for Egrets to go.
