You Can’t See the Mural at
Tenley Automotive Anymore
Battleship grey paint buries the brushstrokes
here the mural used to be, right there by the air
compressors. Someday archaeologists will excavate
layers on the north wall of the mental hospital and find
a sand yellow band at the bottom, then a horizon
the same hues as the chest-high row of roses
by the gas pumps, lined up like lipstick
in the drugstore display. Ruby tire track treads
drive up the bricks to the center deity,
a sun of wrenches and spark plugs
radiant beams of the mechanic’s imagination.
