A Mountain Stream at Chamonix

A Mountain Stream at Chamonix

We stand in the mountain stream,
the water angrily swirls around us.
It takes its frustration out
on the rocks on either side
which are furiously pounded.

The trees that bend over the water,
touch and caress the cold current,
a final farewell before it merges
with the river and loses identity.

We feel the fury of yesterday’s storm
still alive, as if it charges the stream
with renewed sparks of energy
in the very heart of its being.

We can stem the flow for a minute,
but we feel the power of the current
moving the mud and stones at our feet.
It will remain long after we go,
for decades, for centuries, for millennia-
as long as the mountains feed it.
