Laurel Ridge
The grasshoppers buzz like live wires
in the short and tall grass
Daffodil corpses surround on hills
While turtles swim by in the deep of the pond,
murky water and duckweed scum act like closed curtains so we can’t see
And the cattle lick their young on the hill
While the green grows fast around them
Just as fast the babes will become cows
And it is freezing in Antarctica,
Barely,
The monstrous snow caps have been humbled to water
And the boulder we sit upon looks something like an iceberg, too
Sweet summer air percolates through me
I love the taste
but even better with a friend
